Hello! Today I would like to teach you some grammar to guess the meaning of expressions. In learning a foreign language we should never underestimate the power of guessing. It is always necessary when we come across some expression which we don’t know. For example, let’s say you heard the following expression.

今日は表現の意味を推測するための言葉を紹介したいと思います。

外国語を習うと推測力の役割を軽視してはいけません。

知らない言葉と出会った時には大変必要になってきます。

例えば次の発言を聞いみてください？

Sentence A: Herman was fuming after you told him you couldn’t go see a movie with him.

Do you know the meaning of “fuming” in this sentence? Well, you can use the following modal verbs to guess at the meaning.

センテンスAの中の「fuming」という言葉はご存知ですか？次の表現の助動詞を使えば意味を聞くことが出来ます。

Sentence 1: It might mean “sad.”

センテンス１：　それは「sad」という意味かもしれません。

Sentence 2: It could mean “busy.”

センテンス２：　それは「busy」という意味かもしれません。

Sentence 3: It must mean “angry.”

センテンス３：　それはきっと「angry」という意味です。

Sentences 1 and 2 express the same degree of certainty in guessing the meaning which is around 30% or so. Sentence 3 expresses a very high degree of certainty at around 90%. And, actually Sentence 3 is the correct meaning. “Fuming” comes from the word “fume” used for “gas” and expresses the idea of someone being so mad that steam seems to come off his/her body. These expressions are a good way to check meanings with a native speaker friend. So, don’t be afraid to take a stab at what might be the correct meaning!

センテンス１と２は意見の自信度が同じく３０％ぐらいだと思います。

それに比べて、センテンス３の自信度はかなり高く、９０％ぐらいだと思います。

そして、実はセンテンス３の推測が正しいです。

「fuming」という単語はガスの「fume」の動詞から来て、
だれかが非常に怒っていて、その人の体から湯気が出るぐらいの怒りです。

今日の表現を使えばネイティブの友達に言葉の意味のチェックが出来ると思います。

だから、知らない言葉の意味を推測するのを怖がらないで、やってみてください！

最後に今日の例文の訳です・・・

センテンスA：　あなたがハーマンに一緒に映画を見に行けないと言ってから、彼はプンプン怒っています。
